TONER FILLING
XEROX
BACKGROUND
Toner used in laser printer cartridges is dispensed by augers. The operation efficiency of these dispensers is low, since anincrease in auger revolution speed causes the sticky toner get compacted, resulting in jams.
- Project goal: to increase the toner dispensing rate by 30% in order to reduce operating cost.
- Target operating cost reduction – 5-10%
- Project restrictions:Existing hopper design should be preserved
Developed solution should be compatible with the existing toner

    WHAT WE DID
Formulated a trimming challenge: How to make nozzle of the hopper to perform the function of the auger.
Solution:
A vibrating valve was installed onto the hopper nozzle. The frequency of vibration is equal to the own frequency of toner particles. It creates pseudo-liquation effects when toner behaves like a liquid. When vibration stops the toner is stuck in the nozzle.
OUTCOME
- Toner dispensing rate increased 18-fold
- Operating cost reduction: 40% (due to dramatically reduced maintenance costs)
- Design and technology protected by several patents
